Showtime Ramon’s Driving Synthwave Hip-Hop Single “84 Dan Marino” Takes a Trip Through 80s Thriller Cinema Vibes

Showtime Ramon brings an unexpected musical and rhetorical complexity to “84 Dan Marino.” Yes, in the music video we see beautiful women and a cool sports car, Ramon delivers an expertly crafted line of swagger and braggadocio like you might expect to see and hear in a mainstream hip-hop banger. But the visual aesthetics of the video is like something from a gritty, 80s thriller including he leads on screen from a film reel and scratches and pops and glitches in the print. It complements the darkly pulsing synthwave beat and the gorgeously evocative melodic splashes that linger like music from an existential horror film of today tapping into the aforementioned 80s vibe. Like Anthony Scott Burns and Nicolas Winding Refn but reaching to an even more lo-fi feel, like Ramon took in more than a few Michael Mann, William Friedkin and Brian De Palma films and absorbed the essence of moods and themes of those movies in writing this song. It has that starkness, menace and a core of melancholia that makes them all effective and “84 Dan Marino” exudes a similar energy. The key line to the song to give it the proper context, or so it seems is when Ramon raps “Lost my best friend now I spit with pain.” With those words, referencing the unsolved murder of Ramon’s best friend, the display of success, luxury, vitality, the promise of pleasure all comes into focus as where your head may need to be so your heart doesn’t sink into oblivion. Not to escape those feelings of loss and despair but to survive them. Ramon makes the processing of the darkest times of our lives feel like an adventure, a chapter of life and an affirmation of what makes being alive feel so significant and good. The song hits hard yet reminds you of the good things in life. Queen City Sounds Podcast S3E22: DJ Tower

DJ Tower aka Tim Alexander has been a fixture in the Denver music scene since the 90s. With early gigs and residencies in the Goth scene, Alexander has gone on to be one of the resident DJs with Lipgloss, the nation’s longest-running indie dance night run by founder Michael Trundle. As a teenage fan of heavy metal and synthesizer music it seems inevitable that Alexander would become fascinated with the nascent synthwave movement that emerged in the mid-to-late 2000s in France and Western Europe. The fusion of analog synth composition and bombastic rock guitar was also inspired by 1980s film soundtracks in the realm of action, science fiction and horror where artists like John Carpenter, Vangelis, Jan Hammer, Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre and Giorgio Moroder reigned supreme. Modern synthwave perhaps came to prominence outside of niche musical circles when Kavinsky’s song “Nightcall” appeared on the soundtrack to Nicolas Winding-Refn’s 2011 action noir film Drive starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan. It cemented in many people’s minds the American past time of night drives and their attendant sense of romance and freedom. The track made its way onto Kavinsky’s 2013 classic album OutRun, a title that became a term closely affiliated with the genre. Alexander himself borrowed the name for his monthly synthwave night Outrun which has been a regular event every first Saturdays for nearly a decade.

Alexander also tried his hand at making synthwave music of his own as a member of the musical trio TetraKroma for a handful of years but has gone back to focusing on his ability to explore the art form and other styles of music and share his passion for the music with others via his DJ gigs. In 2023 Alexander lanched his inaugural synthwave festival Synthbanger’s Ball (a clear nod to MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball program) to be held Saturday, September 2, 2023 at The Oriental Theater in Denver, Colorado with Los Angeles-based headliner Droid Bishop as well as local synthwave stars Elayarson, Star Farer, Patternshift, Jacket, Bob Sync with between music pre-recorded music sets from DJs Tower, Jay, Eric and Niq V. In this interview we dive deep into Alexander’s roots in music, his entry into the world of being a regular DJ and how his fascination with synthwave came to be as a youth in the 80s when epic, popular heavy metal and synthesizer music were developing into the forms that would directly influence synthwave as well as the modern form and how it has evolved and continues to grow and thrive.

Autow Nite Superstore’s “Sharp, Sharp Blade” Invites You Into a Journey of Late Night Intrigue

The name Autow Nite Superstore brings to mind the image of a twenty-four hour petrol station in the middle of nowhere or at least on the edge of town that is also part video rental store department store, coffee shop and dance club. The video for the group’s song “Sharp, Sharp Blade” made with the help of collaborators all around the world since the regular shooting of the video was interrupted by the global pandemic of 2019-2020. The result is a short film that is reminiscent of a Nicolas Winding Refn project and Run Lola Run with tonally rich techno score that is spacious and urgent. The standout bass line in the song expands and thins out in a fluid dynamic with the phased synth arpeggio and wordless vocals for a song that soothes the mind and brings you along for a journey into late night intrigue. Watch the video on YouTube, connect with the Greek techno project at the links below and check out for the full length album Conversations on Bandcamp.
