Koresma Expresses the Tranquility of Eternal Cycles on Downtemp IDM Track “Waves”

With some scratches thrown in for texture, Koresma’s “Waves” sounds like someone put an old improbably techno remix of a Cocteau Twins song on the turntable. But with summery, vivid guitar melody over the top and pitch shifted vocal samples bubbling up and fading out quickly. Synth shimmers at an even and rapid pace like a slow moving flicker of tone. All over an evolving percussive beat in an IDM vein. The mix conveys a sense of panning channels giving ample room for the elements to drift and occupy various spaces in your field of hearing. But the lead female-sounding vocals sit center intone with an ethereal, introspective quality, contemplating the movement of waves as the tide comes in as a pattern that reflects eternal cycles and a sense of universal stability in a world that can seem to have gone awry especially with quickly escalating climate change. The Owsey remix of Koresma’s “Northern Lights” gives it a dusky and lush, downtempo sheen. Adding sultry vocals, some subtle low end, and luminous strings, Owsey has enhanced the electronic horns of the original so that the song develops from a late night jazz vibe to a trance-y, chillout atmosphere that glimmers with shifting colors of the actual Northern Lights. Like if you could be in some kind of floating nightclub somewhere within clear visual distance of the phenomenon and the sense of wonder and calm that might fill you seeing them for the first time in person without the haze of pollution putting a filter between you and the experience. Koresma’s Chill, Downtempo Track “Free” is Imbued With a Sense of Open Spaces and Possibilities

“Free,” the first single from Koresma’s forthcoming North EP begins with the kind of soft synth figure that suggests snowbound landscapes, female vocals floating through an evolving melody accented by minimalist electronic percussion. Bubbling arpeggios swell into the foreground and retreat like a wind. Spare guitar filigrees give the song some of its grounding but the song is structured to convey a memories of the songwriter’s grandfather’s stories of living in the Faroe Islands, an archipelago between Iceland and Norway. The track succeeds in capturing for us the stark beauty and sense of the whole world open around you that must have been part of everyday life and thus the title.
