Rex Kalibur Gives Voice to the Stark Beauty of Beach Resorts in the Off Season While the Winter Winds Blow

“Residue” sounds like someone left a tape recorder in the corner of the porch of a beach resort clubhouse in the winter months and played a rickety piano nearby as the night time winds rush by. Somehow the spare piano melody cuts through though muted by the limitations of the recording medium and equipment. But this arrangement captures those other elements in a way that gives it the perfect character and mood that is so deeply evocative of a time and place where if you’re there you’re struck by the stark beauty of a place whose utility is entirely mysterious without the people around engaging in the activity for it was build to bring to the milieu its social context and usual meanings, energies and dynamics. Without the human element there other than as an observer and as an entity bringing an entirely new type of aesthetic to environment. At the end of the song the winds are gone so perhaps there was a wide door open to the late night chill. In that moment we are made aware of a context that was invisible just listening and that details further shows how our impressions of a place can change and the emotional character as well when the specific stimuli changes as well.
